Give It A Shot! Blares the Knights of Columbus Bangkal Davao 8824 Council’s bond-size photocopy promotion ad in the recently concluded Council Level Free Throw Championship last Sunday, May 2, 2004.

A total of thirty-four entrants between ages 10 to 14 years old participated in the Eliminations conducted at the Central Park Subdivision Phase 1 Gym in Bangkal, Davao City last April 17, 18, 24 and 25. This is also where the Council 8824’s office is situated and housed.

Like in the past Free Throw Championship done two years ago, it is an activity mostly participated by boys. Girls are not inclined to participate even though we encourage some during the promotion stage during the last month of the school year in March 2004. It was an all-boys competition in the 12-14 year old bracket, while a lone girl participant out of four entrants participated in the 10-11 year old bracket. However during the Finals conducted on Sunday, May 2, 2004, only 3 out of 7 finalists showed up for the 12-14 year old bracket and none for the 10-11 year bracket. It would be known later that the parents of the finalists have sent their children to out-of-town errands during that weekend.

The finalists who were present and shot it out in the 12-14 year old bracket were Boffin Marc C. Colmenares, Julius Michael B. Mutog and Jestone M. Razonable. The Free Throw Championship event on May 2 showed that the Elimination performances did not depict the trend in the Finals. In the Eliminations, Julius scored 11 out of 15 shots, Boffin made nine while Jestone got 8.

The Finals result: Jestone M. Razonable capped the Championship with 11 out of 25 baskets, Julius Michael B. Mutog finished with ten shots and Boffin Marc C. Colmenares ended his attempt with nine baskets. A Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship Medal and a Certificate of Free Throw Shooting Excellence with Php250.00 cash prize was given to Jestone. A Certificate of Participation with Cash prizes of Php150.00 and Php100.00 were respectively given to the First and Second Runners Up.

Other Council 8824 Brother Knights who assisted in the Eliminations and Finals as judges, scorers and rebounders are Jose Augusto B. Mangune (Deputy Grand Knight), Edilberto B. Tanudtanud (Chancellor), Alan R. Ibañez, Richie B. Dalupe and Robert A. Russel.
