COUNCIL HISTORY
The Charter (1984)
Star Awards (1984-1994)

After the Charter Fraternal fellowship hangover, the Brother Knights waste no time in letting the community know that K of C is already in their midst. Various church and community projects were immediately undertaken.

Free-medical and dental services, optical clinics (with free eye-glasses), free diabetic testing, operation tule (circumcision), anti-drug dependency campaign, living rosary, dawn rosary, way-of-the-cross, family gatherings and other projects that benefited not only the residence of Bangkal but also Talomo, Toril, Punta Dumalag, and Ulas.

Early in this period, the tradition of GIFT-GIVING to indigent families in the community was conceived and started. The funds of gift-giving were raised through Christmas carolling and a house-to-house solicitation of "a cup of rice". The recipients included not only those from Bangkal but also families coming as far as Talomo and the Smokey Mountain area at the Diversion Highway. This yearly tradition is done during the last week of December.

Recruitment of members continued, covering not only Bangkal but also Talomo, Ulas, Matina and other areas. Gentlemen from all walks of life were invited and recruited disproving the prevailing notion (at that time) that members of the Knight of Columbus are only from the elite segment of the community.

The Council formed its own First-Degree Exemplification Team. SK Eugenio Balagat and Sir Potenciano Calio are also members of District D-II Second-Degree Team as Chancellor and Warden respectively.

It was also in CYs 1985-1986 and 1986-1987 that BANGKAL DAVAO COUNCIL, helped organized the Catalunan Grande Council. By then the Philippines was already divided into three (3) states: Luson State, Visayas State and Mindanao State. The first Mindanao State Deputy was SK Leonor Lozano who held the post for six years until CY 1992-1993.

Teofilo Venus was appointed as District Deputy (DD) of District D-II for CYs 1988-1989 and 1989-1990, succeeding DD Apolinar Bundalian.

Eugenio Balagat was appointed as DD for CYs 1990-1991 and 1991-1992 succeeding Teofilo Venus. The present DD is Worthy DD SK Elisio Villarino who is now in his third year as DD of District D-II. SK Eugenio Balagat was also appointed as the State Treasurer of Mindanao State for CY 1992-1993. It was also during this year that the Columbian Squires of the Council was formed.

BANGKAL-DAVAO COUNCIL 8824 is by now a FOUR-TIME STAR AWARDEE, the highest honor a council can achieve. All four awards were won in uninterrupted succession. The first award was in 1990-1991 under GK Potenciano Calio. This was followed in 1991-1993 under GK Leonardo Ozoa Jr and 1993-1994 under GK Rolando Matuguinas.

The above-mentioned awards were realized through the able leadership of the officers and unselfish participation of the members in all projects and activities of the Council. The able reporting of the Financial Secretary, Sir Jovencio Lara, can not also be discounted as he ensured that every Council activity would make it on the Supreme Council tally sheet. His services was for sure greatly missed in the earlier years of the Council as the activities accomplished then were equally substantial to qualify for the Star Awards.
